How many of you have Friendster accounts? Facebook accounts? Multiply accounts? Twitter accounts? or even Blogs? These are some of the sites that let an individual show his "true" self on the net, hoping to find new "friends" who share the same interests as his/hers. However, is the "personality" one is posing on the net his/her real identity? I bet not.
All "account profiles" on the internet are based on the individual's "ideal self," the personality an individual wanted to be. He/she believes that through the internet he/she will be finally able to reveal his/her hidden thoughts and beliefs, and find people who will accept him/her as what he/she "truly" is. On the contrary, the truth is that he/she is just creating another persona, for again he/she wants to be accepted (by gaining virtual friends) and impress (blather out his "ideas" to others). Is this normal? Yes. Is this bad? Actually, no.
Having a multiple persona is typical to human. For example, the way you behave at home is not the same as the way you behave in school or in the workplace. We create personas based on the current environment we belong to, and we shift personas whenever we go to another place.
If one is new to the environment, he shifts to his default persona, his "ideal self," and this is gradually modified as he learns more about the norms of this new environment. At this point, he unconsciously decides of something that will make him stand out yet will still be accepted by the society.
He may do something, but that would pose a lot of risk, and this might hurt his chance of survival.
I did not intend to deceive anyone. It's just that none of you understood my true self. - Aizen Sousuke, Bleach
This is a common raison d'étre of those people who had cleverly hidden their harmful motives to others by creating a deceptive persona that does not reveal his desire of dominance, instead doing it secretly.
While this deceptive persona is the most dangerous of all, it is quite amusing that many people have it. Just look at your surroundings; one of your friends might have it. The person you bumped in the street might have it. Even you yourself might have hidden, harmful intents to someone.
What do I want to impart with all of this? The world is full of deception. Do we have to be afraid of this? Not really. We just have to know how to deal with tho world. Am I also deceiving you? Well, since this is just a persona I made up in this blog, I would say YES.
