Why don’t we talk about memories,
even those that really didn’t happen?
Why don’t we order fastfood take-out
by the drive-through one impulsive
hunger-stricken night? Why don’t we
count the kisses our pillows steal on
our skin, and outrun their tally by
a huge feat? Why don’t we wake up
past noon and eat breakfast food
at nine in the afternoon? Why don’t
we exchange vows while running out
of breath under the waves of the sea,
and still our hearts would understand
each word? Why don’t we, darling, why
don’t we?
